Maths
Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering and necessary for financial understanding and most forms of employment.
At Stanningley Primary School our mathematics curriculum is accessible to all our children and aims to maximise the development of every child’s knowledge and skills in this subject. Mathematics is taught using the ‘Power Maths’ Mastery Programme – it is designed to spark curiosity and excitement and enables teachers to nurture confidence in maths. This programme has been written specifically for UK classrooms by leading mastery experts and is a recommended scheme by the Department for Education. Power Maths is taught progressively through school, enabling children to build on their knowledge, embedding a growth mindset approach to maths and building a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
We want children to make rich connections across mathematical ideas, develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. We aim for our pupils to be able to apply their mathematical knowledge in a variety of contexts and in other curriculum areas, such as science and geography. As our pupils progress, we intend for them to be able to understand the world, have the ability to reason mathematically, have an appreciation of the power of mathematics whilst having a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Maths 'Learn by Heart' Facts
All children in Key Stage One and Key Stage Two have a number of key mathematical facts that they learn as part of their homework. The facts are linked to the mathematics objectives in each year group and, wherever possible, they will match the learning taking place within the classroom at that time. This will help improve retention and recall of key facts in order to further embed and support children within their learning. Every week, children will bring home a set of Learn by Heart facts to learn for a test the following week. Unless the facts are self –explanatory, you will also get some instructions as to how to help your child learn the facts. After your child has learned the facts, you can adapt them by asking alternative questions or using alternative numbers so they can apply their skills in different ways. Once they have been tested, they will then have the same set of facts to practise for a further test the following week. They will then be given a new set of facts, thus working on a fortnightly cycle. Please find the Learn by Heart facts for each year group, below.

Year 1 Maths Knowledge Organisers - CHILD FRIENDLY
Every half term, your child's class teacher will email you a knowledge organiser to explain the maths learning that will be taking place in class. These organisers are a fantastic resource to support both parents/carers and children with the understanding of a particular method that is being taught. They are also a fantastic support for homework tasks as the children can refer to them. Below, you will find the knowledge organisers for the whole academic year for Year 1.
