Wellbeing & Mental Health
At Stanningley Primary School, the wellbeing and mental health of our pupils is a top priority. We know that children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and happy — and we work hard to create an environment where every child can thrive emotionally as well as academically.
A Whole-School Approach
We take a whole-school approach to wellbeing, promoting positive mental health through:
-
A caring, inclusive ethos
-
Strong relationships between staff and pupils
-
A focus on respect, kindness, and support
-
Regular check-ins and a readiness to listen
Wellbeing is woven throughout the school day — from classroom practice to lunchtime routines, and from lessons to the playground.
Our Work with MindMate
We are proud to be a MindMate Champion School and use the MindMate curriculum across all year groups. MindMate supports children in understanding and talking about their feelings, building emotional literacy and resilience.
The curriculum includes age-appropriate lessons on:
-
Recognising and managing emotions
-
Friendship and relationships
-
Self-esteem and confidence
-
Coping with change and loss
-
Asking for help when it’s needed
These lessons are delivered through PSHE and wider curriculum activities, often linking to class discussions, assemblies and story-based learning.
Support in School
We know that some children may need more support at different times in their lives. At Stanningley, we offer:
-
A dedicated Inclusion Team
-
Access to a trusted Family Support Worker
-
Learning mentors and support staff for regular check-ins
-
A calm, nurturing environment for pupils who need it
-
Strong relationships with local services and outside agencies
Children know who they can talk to in school and feel confident seeking help when needed.
Encouraging Healthy Minds and Bodies
As part of our wider approach to wellbeing, we also focus on:
-
Physical activity and active play
-
Healthy eating and hydration
-
Mindfulness and relaxation
-
Building self-confidence and a growth mindset
-
Positive assemblies and praise systems
Working in Partnership with Families
We believe supporting wellbeing is a joint effort. We work closely with parents and carers to make sure children feel supported at home and at school. We offer advice, signposting, and are always happy to talk if you have concerns about your child’s wellbeing.
